A 2-hour practical introduction to sumi-e ink painting.
Literally “black ink painting” in Japanese, sumi-e was introduced to Japan by travelling Chinese Buddhist monks more than 800 years ago. It’s intricately intertwined with the Zen Buddhist philosophy of “being in the moment”, making this artform in essence a creative meditation.
This workshop includes a teacher demonstration of the main techniques, materials and tools used. You’ll then have a chance to practise holding the brush and making simple lines using various beginner techniques such as chokujitsu (“upright brush line”) and sokuhitzu (“sliding brush line”). You’ll also learn how to paint a tadpole fish motif and, afterwards, a poppy flower using the tarashikomi technique (“dripping in wet ink”).
The cost is $110 per person or $95 per person for groups of more than two people, including tea and light refreshments. This workshop is suitable for adults and children over the age of 12.
